Click! Click! Click! Whiskey bottles, beer bottles and all kinds of trash did not stop the determined man of God laying claim to the spot of ground God showed him.
In 1984, the Lord gave Elder Willie C Green, (founder and pastor) a vision to start a mission church. As he searched out different areas, it was confirmed that 515 South Roberts Street in Quincy, Florida, an old fish market, juke joint and “folly ground” was the place for the new church.
During this time, Elder Green was serving as Associate Minister at Bethlehem Church Of God In Christ, where District Superintendent Robert L. McLeod (now deceased) was pastor. Because of Elder Green’s concern for Superintendent McLeod and the members of Bethlehem, Elder Green scheduled services at the mission on third Sundays at 3:00 p.m. Elder Green continued to carry out his duties assisting Superintendent McLeod.
On the third Sunday in August, 1984, the first service was held in the little building which is now the main entrance in the new sanctuary. Members of Bethlehem Church gave great support by attending the mission on third Sundays to help with the services.
In the second year, 1985, of the mission, Elder Green realized it was time to move forward with the task which God had assigned to him. As members joined and the congregation grew, a larger place was needed for worship. On the property, a two story building was next to the building housing the mission church. This two story building, the lower level, was renovated for use.
August 31, 1985, a business meeting was held and Elder Green announced that God said it was time to purchase the property. From that point, a theme was chosen, “WE WILL BUILD A CHURCH BY FAITH AND WORKS.” There was no physical evidence that this would happen but, when Elder Green made known what God had given him, “the people had a mind to work.” With hard work, prayer and fasting, the property was purchased for $24,000 on June 15, 1987.
The first officials were appointed in 1985 and included: Deacon Willie B. Wright, Chairman Deacon; Mother Minnie Johnson, Church Mother; Missionary Diane Green, Church Secretary; and Missionary Retha Norris, Youth President. Many came and many left, but God continued to bless the mission to prosper. Revival after revival, prayer meetings, shut-ins, and fasting kept the wheels turning for “the people had a mind to work.” Evangelist Charles E. Lewis, Evangelism President of the Jurisdiction of Western Florida, came annually to conduct revivals during the early years of this ministry.
On June 12, 1988, the blue prints were drawn up for the new building which God had given to house the church. About three months later, the foundation was poured and at each stage of the building project some type of obstacle arose to delay the work, but Elder Green was always there to encourage the body to work harder and pray more. Finally the walls were up and the saints were determined to really work. The building project continued to progress and the body continued to increase. The saints began to see the vision coming together piece by piece.
March 19, 1989, the new building was dedicated by Bishop Melton L. Sconiers and Superintendent Elbert L. Sheppard, First Assistant to Bishop Sconiers and Superintendent of the Big Bend District. Minister Joseph Green was recommended by Pastor Willie C. Green for ordination. In August, Minister Joseph Green was ordained by Bishop Sconiers in Orlando, Florida at the Jurisdictional Holy Convocation. He became the first elder ordained under Elder Willie C. Green. In 1987, Charles Weaver served as financial secretary. Later, appointed were Sister Juanita Green, Financial Secretary; Missionary Patricia Williams, Sunday School Superintendent; and Brother Troy Johnson, Deacon by Pastor Willie C. Green. Brother Johnson, was also, ordained as deacon.
In the year 2003, God gave Elder Green the vision to help young people of Gadsden County who were having problems passing the FCAT. The vision was to start a private academy to assist students academically. On August 11, 2003, The Community Learning Institute (TCLI) opened with 91 students. In 2004, there were over 200 students enrolled. There have been many graduating students since the inception of the school.
In June 2007, Bishop Harvey D. Bryan appointed Quincy Pastor, Dr. Willie C. Green, District Superintendent of The Greater Gulf Coast District. Dr. Green served as Superintendent for almost three years. On March 4, 2010, the pastors of The Northwest Florida Jurisdiction asked Dr. Green to serve as their Bishop. They unanimously recommended him to the General Board of the Church of God In Christ, Inc. In the April Call Meeting, 2010, The General Board approved Dr. Green’s appointment as the Jurisdictional Bishop of Northwest Florida. At the same time, The General Board approved the request of seven of the eight churches in The Greater Gulf Coast District to transfer to The Northwest Florida Jurisdiction from Western Florida with Bishop Green. Bishop Green was consecrated as the Prelate of The Northwest Florida Jurisdiction on November 15, 2010 at the International Convocation in Saint Louis, Missouri.
